Commemorating October 7

As we near the one year anniversary of October 7, Hillel wants you to know that we will have different ways to commemorate this day.

GLC Lawn

We will be on the GLC Lawn from 12 pm to 3 pm. There will be a pinwheel display, symbolic of the number of hostages still currently in Hamas captivity in Gaza. This display is there to help people conceive of the events that occurred in a more digestible, easier to understand format. Also on the GLC Lawn we will have supplies for individuals to write letters of support for the families of living captives. There will also be a Post-It wall, where individuals can express messages of empathy and hope for victims and their families.

Drillfield

We will be on the Drillfield from 12 pm to 7 pm.

From 12 pm to 3 pm we will have a kite flying vigil for Kfar Aza. On October 7, 20203 there was supposed to be a kite flying event in Kfar Aza, one of the villages on the border of Gaza that was attacked. In memory of those who were murdered, those who are still being held hostage, and all of the people of Kfar Aza whose lives have been changed, we will be flying kites on this day, as they would have been doing had the attacks not happened.

From 3 pm to 6 pm on the Drillfield, we will erect an interactive memorial exhibit for the hostages. This memorial will represent all of the hostages kidnapped from Israel on October 7th, whether alive or dead, still captive or released. This interactive memorial will give people an appreciation for how many people were taken. The memorial will also help people to learn about the hostages, as real, individual people and not just symbols of some larger conflict.

From 6 pm to 7 pm on the Drillfield, we will have a vigil and memorial ceremony. We will read speeches about our loved ones, sing the Acheinu prayer, and close with the Hatikva.

Hillel Building

For a quieter setting, you can come to the Hillel building any time. There will be dedicated staff onsite all day to provide students with group or one-on-one support. Our hours are 10 am to 10 pm, and from 4-8 pm we will have a space to light candles, reflect, and be in community.
